Whether you replace your spindles with a singular glass panel or smaller individual panes of glass, or go all out with glass treads or risers, a glass staircase is guaranteed to give your home the facelift it needs.
From brightening up dark hallways to making smaller spaces feel much larger, there are countless reasons why people are incorporating glass into their staircase designs.
However, due to the (many) misconceptions – surrounding the safety of glass staircases, maintenance requirements and cost – lots of people are put off by the idea altogether.
If you’re in two minds about a glass staircase, we’re here to debunk some of the most common myths and misconceptions about glass staircases to make your decision a little easier!
Myth #1: Glass staircases break easily
One of the biggest concerns for those considering using glass in their staircase design is that it’s incredibly easy to break.
But this couldn’t be further from the truth.
Yes, standard glass can shatter easily, but glass panels used in staircase designs are manufactured from toughened glass.
Toughened glass is up to five times stronger than everyday glass, which is why it’s the preferred choice for residential and commercial glass staircase projects.
Myth #2: Glass staircases are more slippery
Another common worry is that glass poses an increased risk of slips, trips and falls, due to it being more slippery than other materials.
However, most modern staircase panels are designed with an anti-slip surface for added safety, and are available in a range of textures and patterns that provide extra grip.
So, you needn’t worry about frequent accidents (and potential injuries!) on the stairs.
Myth #3: Glass staircases are too pricey
Whilst it’s true that glass staircase panels may cost more than traditional staircase materials like oak or stainless steel, this doesn’t mean they aren’t a worthwhile investment.
Being super strong, durable and easy to maintain, glass staircases can last for 20 years or more, and if they’re well looked after, increase the value of your property if you ever decide to put it back on the market.
So, it’s safe to say that you’ll definitely get your money’s worth over the years!
Myth #4: Glass staircases are hard to keep clean
Where this myth comes from is a mystery, as glass staircase parts are some of the easiest to keep clean.
Like all materials, glass requires regular upkeep to ensure it stays looking its best, but it doesn’t take more than a quick wipe down once a week along with the rest of the glass furnishings in your home.
Use a clean, microfibre cloth that’s been dampened with a gentle cleaning solution (warm water and washing-up liquid will suffice!) and buff away any smudges and fingerprints using small circular motions. Once you’ve got rid of all the marks, use a fresh cloth to buff the panels dry to ensure a stunning, streak-free finish.
If you come across any particularly stubborn stains, add a touch of white vinegar or lemon juice and they should come out easily.
